It can take three to four applications before it fully fixes the oil pastels. This really makes the piece stand out. It s a spray on product that will seal your pastels and protect them both from light and from friction. For a more advanced technique try cross hatching by drawing parallel lines with your first color then layering another set of parallel lines on top that are perpendicular to the first set.

But if you want to make sure your artwork is archival then it can be safer to protect your paper by brushing on a layer or gesso or acrylic medium.

Oil pastels are made with inert oils and wax and are not supposed to damage paper as oil sticks would oil sticks are usually made with linseed oil. Laminating is going to destroy it. After drawing with an oil pastel and coloring with chalk outline the good drawing lines with a black oil pastel. But i would suggest you go to an art store and get a pastel shellac.

Alternatively you can use a tortillon or a color shaper to blend oil pastels. I bought a matte fixative to use as a gloss but the color keeps coming off. When using this technique remember that any application which is too heavy can be blended for a smooth feel. It s possible but i do not recommend that you laminate oil pastels for the reasons i have given below.
